Peer effects and endogenous social interactions

چکیده

This paper proposes a solution to the problem of endogenous selection peers in linear-in-means model. We do not require specify model for how comes about. Rather, we exploit two restrictions that are inherent many such specifications construct conditional moment conditions. The question link decisions involve given individual all independent one another, but they made between other pairs individuals located sufficiently far away network. These conditions imply instrumental variables can be constructed from leave-own-out networks.

Peer effects in endogenous networks

This paper presents a simple model of strategic network formation with local complementarities in e ort levels and positive local externalities. Equilibrium networks display other than the complete and the empty network a core-periphery structure, which is commonly observed in empirical studies. Ex-ante homogenous agents may obtain very di erent ex-post outcomes. These ndings are relevant for a...

Peer Effects and Social Networks in Education

Peer Effects and Social Networks in Education This paper studies whether structural properties of friendship networks affect individual outcomes in education. We first develop a model that shows that, at the Nash equilibrium, the outcome of each individual embedded in a network is proportional to her Katz-Bonacich centrality measure. This measure takes into account both direct and indirect frie...

Effects of Peer Support Interventions on Students’ Access to the General Curriculum and Social Interactions

Peer support interventions are emerging as an effective alternative to traditional paraprofessional models for assisting students with moderate to severe disabilities to access the general curriculum. To contribute to the refinement of peer support interventions, we evaluated the impact of altering the number of participating peers on the social and academic outcomes of students with and withou...

A Model of Social Interactions and Endogenous Poverty Traps

This paper develops a model of social interactions and endogenous poverty traps. The key idea is captured in a framework in which the likelihood of future social interactions with members of one’s group is partly determined by group-specific investments made by individuals. I prove three main results. First, some individuals expected to make group-specific capital investments are worse off beca...

Identifying Endogenous Peer Effects in the Spread of Obesity

Recent research in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) purports to show the existence of peer effects in the spread of obesity. Using a dataset of 5124 residents from Framingham, Massachusetts spanning the years 1971 to 2003, the authors show correlations between own weight gain and friends’ and relatives’ weight gain over this period. They find, furthermore, that these results are stron...
